The "foreigners" made a killing in the 15th adition of the Gran Premio "Palio del Recioto," a bicycle race for diIettanti third series, perfectly organized by the U.C. Veronese.
Ivan Butti of U.S. Audace Nave of Brescia won by a breakaway, while Marcoli of Milan, Coppi and Gotti of Mariani of Brescia and Spagnoli of Pedale Bresciano placed in the places of honor, 20 minutes behind. No Veronese figures in the top 15 finishers.
The winner played the decisive card on the climb of the Colle di Masua, more exactly near the Gran Premio della Montagna (the trophy offered by Luigi Delaini of Lazise was up for grabs). Pedal by pedal he made the gap behind him, despite the tenacious pursuit of a small group of four competitors, and managed, nd the next climb to gain more precious seconds, reaching the finish line with a clear margin.
A truly superlative proof that of the promising Butti as he was always in the first positions to then launch the decisive attack when all or most of his opponents had already expended a lot of energy.
As many as 113 competitors at the start given in front of the Negrar town hall, very large crowd present. Ten laps of the Madonnina circuit are to be contested. First retirements: Carli, followed shortly after by Girlanda and Fontanella victim of a fall. A little later Marini and Meggiolaro also set foot on the ground.
They leave the local circuit to face, after touching Parona, that of Moron. A very narrow road with several ups and downs that put the competitors to the test. Caldari wins the first flying finish line.
A heavy rain invests the caravan. Lovato, Foradori, Ceolan, Concato, Valotto, Zulian lose ground. A real selection is taking place. Among those withdrawn for punctures are Speri, one of the eve's favorites, then Perusi and Novelli.
The voting finish offered by Mcb Mion sees in order Taglietti, Spagnoli, and Rosetto, that of Moron is won by Giacomini with at the wheel Morici in Bellamio.
We now face the toughest part of the race the Masua Pass. The best take their positions and pressing on the pedals go towards the Grand Prix of the Mountain. Hosted by the very sporty Baietta's "Bmw," we remount the various small groups scattered along the route to catch up with the leaders. In the lead is Gotti with a lead of about a hundred meters, but the rider seems tried by fatigue and before the climax he is caught and passed by Butti, Spagnoli, Marcoli, Coppi, and Cogoli. They are all the best.
Butti plays the decisive card. He sprints two or three times and plants all of his opponents in the lurch to sprint toward the mountain grand prix, which he cuts about 10" ahead, followed by Coppi and Spagnoli. 11 outriders threw themselves headlong into the descent on Negrar and would not be caught again despite the tenacious pursuit of Marcoli, Spagnoli, Gotti and Coppi.
The lone winner's arrival is greeted by two thick wings of the crowd lined up on either side of the driveway where the final finish line is placed. With a delay of 20" the quintet, regulated in the sprint Marcoli, then more detached the others, about fifty who brought the hard effort to a conclusion.
